Bawls Guarana Cherry, as reviewed, in the bottle, shares the same bottle shape as the other Bawls Guarana High Caffeine Sodas. Bawls Cherry is the only clear bottle, with red accents, including the cap. The text on the bottle/cap read (perhaps multiple times) "Bawls Guarana Cherry", "High Caffeine Soda" or "High Caffeine Guarana Soda". The bottle has little grippy bumps on it, and a good weight. This bottle would probably be ideal in a bar fight. I like that Bawls keeps it simple, no droning on about how cool they are, like Monster Energy Drinks. The only non-ingredient information on the back is "Warning: This product contains high levels of caffeine".
Today we're reviewing the Cherry flavor of Bawls Gaurana. Original blue Bawls is likely my favorite all-around energy drink. Admittedly, the iconic blue glass bottle looks appealing and refreshing. I am moderately surprised that the cherry flavor does not come in a red glass bottle. I can only guess the correlation to hot/spicy are the reasons they deviated from colored glass, that, or red glass packaging is very expensive. Personally, as much as I like the bottles aesthetically; for affordability, I prefer the 16oz. cans.
Lots of people ask me what my favorite energy drink is. I have several based on what I'm looking for out of the drink, and the situation. Am I thirsty? Does it taste like strychnine? Is it convenient to transport? Does it fit in the cup holder, or in my pocket? Am I going to feel like chalky white turds if I take it on an empty stomach? These are all considerations in why I respond that the original Bawls is probably my favorite all-around energy drink. I'll address many of these to clarify, and discuss how Bawls Guarana Cherry compares.
Firstly, Original Bawls Guarana is light and refreshing. It's deliciously, albeit mildly flavored. It's not overtly sugary or thick, so it quenches the thirst. I'm torn on Cherry Bawls, because it's all the things I love about Bawls Guarana, but with a mild cherry taste (almost an aftertaste). Part of me wishes they had gone for a super tart over-the-top cherry flavor. As it is, it's simply not differentiated enough from original Bawls Guarana to merit being a separate flavor. I could drink both flavors interchangeably. Now, what that means is, I also love Cherry Bawls, but I'm indifferent as to which flavor (original or cherry) that I buy.
The bottles are attractive and have grippy bumps on them. The 16oz. Cans are pretty much standard 16oz. Cans, so there aren't really any transportation issues for day-to-day. If I'm going hiking, camping, traveling by plane, or the like, these are the times I'm more interested in DynaPep or an energy shot. And if you have shy bladder issues, often you don't want all those fluids sitting in your bladder at sporting events, concerts, etc.. But, If I'm sitting at my computer playing some Diablo III, grilling some burgers in the backyard, or being overly competitive at games involving bean bags or golf balls on strings, then Bawls is my drink of choice.
Since Bawls isn't inundated with B-vitamins, you're safe from the niacin flush. Also, since it's got a reasonable number of carbs, you can enjoy it and feel energized as a standalone product, or as a delicious compliment to a meal. It is reasonable that taking 5-hour energy and other energy shots on an empty stomach is counter-intuitive, since the B-vitamins can't aid in metabolizing food you didn't eat. Also, since it contains no significant calories of it's own, it's likely taking an energy shot without food (particularly for breakfast) will leave you feeling worse than not taking an energy supplement.
For the most part, I consider Bawls Guarana and Bawls Cherry to be nearly indiscernibly different products. That means I love Bawls Cherry, and would recommend you buy it, but no more than I'd recommend you just buy Bawls Guarana. I'm left wishing that Bawls had been more adventurous with the flavor.
As for the price, if you can get these in your area, they're probably around $2 for either the 10oz. Bottle or 16oz. Can. Unfortunately, the $2/16oz. can 24 cases, are no longer available with free 2-day shipping on Amazon Prime. With shipping prices often accounting for nearly half the price of an online order, and Bawls simply not being available, even in most of the surrounding states, it's only available to us around $3/bottle or can after shipping. Obviously too high. Just another reason to not live in North Carolina.
Unlike some "other" reviewer here, I wasn't in line the day Bawls was released, so 15 years later I could talk about how I'd discovered it. It's like every high school freshman that thinks they discovered marijuana. Anyway, some of us weren't even 10 years old in the 90's. That being said, I know this particular old fart loves Bawls, and I have it on good authority that he's been drinking it, when he can get his hands on it, since at least 2001.
This was my first time drinking the Bawls Guarana Cherry. It was good. I'd take it over most sodas, for sure. The one thing I noticed is that it's not syrupy like most energy drinks. Seriously, I like the major brands, but it's like I have a sugar film on my teeth after drinking Monster, Red Bull or Rockstar (particularly Rockstar). I almost need to buy a bottle of water as a chaser/mouthwash.
I've had lots of really strong energy drinks, so I didn't really take Bawls seriously. It almost seemed more gimmick to me from the bottle, and the original bottle being blue (get it? Blue Bawls...) So, what I learned is, whatever 70mg or so of caffeine they're using in Bawls, it's higher octane than what I'm getting elsewhere. Bawls Guarana Cherry will juggle your booboo as much as Cocaine's 280mg of caffeine. With as effective as Bawls Guarana is, it makes me wonder if all those other ingredients are really even necessary (Inositol, Tuarine, L-Carnitine, etc). Jason insists that Ginseng is completely useless for energy, and that it's probably an artifact from Asian virility/aphrodisiac herbal supplements or natural medicine predecessors to energy drinks. One thing is for certain, Bawls is pretty much caffeine and carbohydrates, and it does as good a job as any of the fancier concoctions.
