I started with a case of 24 Hype Energy Drinks. Perhaps because I had so many, I drank the first one with no real thought about reviewing the taste, energy, or value. I didn't think I was very impressed. Until the next day, when I went to the refrigerator, stocked with more energy drinks than food, and after careful debate, walked away with a Hype. This trend continued, while at least 6 other drinks were readily available, I reached for a Hype. Now 18 drinks into a case, I've started to put my finger on it. Firstly, I love asian energy drinks, because of their unique bold flavor, and thick sugary sweetness. The only thing I don't like about them, is that they are slightly too thick for me, without being carbonated. Then it hit me, Hype tastes like one of the Asian candy sodas, like Panther or Carabao, only with added carbonation.
Like a Radiohead album, I think it took a day to grow on me, because I needed to appreciate the unique flavor. So many sodas tastes the same now, after you've had a Hype, you value it's deviation from the beaten path.
As for energy, firstly, there are enough carbs to wake the dead, followed by a myriad of B vitamins, C, and E, plus Taurine and caffeine. All this made for a pleasant boost of energy, which won't make you feel cracked out, but may induce some inexplicable parody of American Idol contestants in the shower.
Before discussing value, let me warn you ahead of time, that I'll be using a quote from 90% of the energy drink websites in the known world. At about $1.50, this soda provides a pleasant taste, with the kick in the pants you need to get going, "and that's no bull". There, I used it, I think that makes us an official energy drink site now.
So now that you have all that information, lets get down to the bottom. My first reaction to Hype was not so good. However, my first taste of Hype came from a sizable belch that came out of Jason that I happened to be sitting downwind of? that sort of thing doesn't leave your mind for a while, so I took my time before I tasted Hype myself. I was very pleasantly surprised.
Hype is flavored with real elderberry and cranberry juices. I assume the cranberry is what gives it that tart bite, which is great in my book, along with a nicely sweet flavor with a hint of something that tastes like toasted marshmallows. I can't figure out what that is, but that eventually lead me to chug the can down pretty quickly. Perhaps that is what elderberries taste like. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries! There I said it. Otherwise it is clean, refreshing, and lightly carbonated. And when I say lightly carbonated that doesn't mean so lightly that five minutes after you open it all the carbonation is gone.
So what's all the Hype about? Well Hype energy gave me a great kick; this was totally unexpected, especially for such a small can. I can't wait to get a few of the 16oz versions of this.
